Wednesday Wonders 6

1. IA Writer

I still flip back and forth between this and Ulysses, partly because Ulysses seems better for longer-form writing. But for a seamless, distraction free writing interface, IA Writer takes a lot of beating.

Despite having been updated and improved fairly consistently over the past few years, IA Writer doesn't seem to have changed at all, which is a testament to the good taste of the developers.

2. Last Dance

Every now and again someone does something stupidly ambitious which moves a medium on from where it was. Max Blair's Last Dance is a fantasy audio series which, given that it is made for no money, really should not have been attempted.

And yet not only did Max and his cast and crew attempt it, devoting untold hours of time and untold units of energy, but they have succeeded to the extent that they have a British Podcast Award nomination and are building a serious following. No one got a penny for Season One, but the show has been picked up by the Rusty Quill Network and the gang are about to launch a Kickstarter for Season 2.

Check out the show and then pledge your interest at the Kickstarter pre-launch HERE. It costs you nothing, but the pre-launch registration numbers can really help to boost a show's profile on the site. Consider it your Wednesday mitzvah.

3. Kowloon Walled City

This place has fascinated me ever since I saw it from the outside as a child.

But now, someone has built the whole thing, to scale, in Minecraft! You can read more about that here and you can watch the builder video, which is fascinating, here:

For more on the Walled City, I highly recommend Greg Girard's astonishing (and, depending where you source it, astonishingly expensive) photobook City of Darkness. I also highly recommend...

4. Twilight of the Warriors: Walled in

Mention of the Walled City brought this movie back into my head. I'm no connoisseur of martial arts movies, but Twilight of the Warriors is a hugely imaginative, really fun ride - think Kung Fu Hustle on steroids.

5. Yoshitoshi Kanemaki’s Sculptures

These are carved from a single piece of wood, with the intention of exploring the different facets of a person.

And that's Wednesday.
