This is just depressing: The Film Students Who Can No Longer Sit Through Films - The Atlantic. Maybe I'm a little Victorian about this, but I think if you're on a film course, it should be mandatory to attend a percentage of in-person screenings, and at those screenings, phones should be handed in at the door and given back afterwards. Any student who cannot cope with either of those things will not be able to cope with the rigours of life in the industry (or life in general) and should go do another course.
Yes, it's the technology culture that is to blame, not the students, but we're not doing the students any favours by not preparing them for real life.
At the other end of things, the great Austin Kleon just announced his new book: Don’t Call it Art - Austin Kleon
If you haven't read any of Austin's books before, grab a copy of Steal Like an Artist and prepare to be seriously inspired.
